How a windshield chip is repaired

A stone impact can leave a round chip, a star break or damage with radiating cracks. Similar appearances do not mean the same repairability: a technician first assesses the actual glass. This guide explains professional windshield chip repair in Tbilisi.

Recognising the damage

Shape helps you describe a chip when contacting a studio. Depth, position, contamination and glass condition also affect the decision.

• Bullseye: a round break with an impact point and a dark ring.
• Star break: small cracks radiating from an impact point; all branches matter.
• Combination break: a round part with radiating cracks.
• Surface pit: a small surface defect. It should not automatically be treated as a chip for resin filling or promised removal by polishing; the method follows inspection.

The name does not predict an invisible result or a set number of filling cycles. A technician checks the glass from inside and outside; a photo starts the conversation but does not replace inspection.

Why arrange an assessment promptly?

Dust and moisture may enter the damage, and its shape may change. Contamination can make preparation harder and leave a visible mark after filling.

There is no universal first-48-hours guarantee. A fresh chip may be unsuitable, while an older one needs assessment of its condition. Its age cannot establish ten years of service or a probability of cracking.

Tell the studio when it appeared, whether it has spread and whether repairs were attempted. If it affects visibility or changes rapidly, discuss a safe inspection arrangement; this article cannot confirm that you can keep driving.

What the tools and resin do

Suitable damage is repaired by removing air and filling it with repair resin. Tools and materials depend on the repair system used.

• Injector and bridge: hold the tool at the damaged area and deliver resin.
• Air removal: vacuum or air displacement prepares the break for filling; not every system needs a separate pump.
• Curing: light-sensitive resin uses an appropriate UV source according to its maker’s instructions.
• Finishing materials: help remove excess material and level the filled area.

Repair resin is made for glass. Clear household glue or epoxy is not equivalent. Resin brand, lamp wavelength and curing time depend on the system; they are not universal BESTAUTO service specifications.

From intake to handover

This is an overview of professional repair. The actual operations follow the damage assessment and the repair system’s instructions.

1. Inspect: assess damage type, size, location and repairability.
2. Agree the work: explain the expected result, possible remaining mark, price and time estimate.
3. Prepare: assess contamination, moisture and working conditions; prepare the area appropriately.
4. Set up: position the equipment for the chosen method.
5. Remove air: prepare the break for filling.
6. Fill: introduce appropriate repair resin and check the fill.
7. Cure: follow the material’s instructions rather than a universal number of minutes.
8. Finish: remove excess material and level the filled area. This is not whole-windshield polishing.
9. Check: assess visibility from the driver’s position and the surface in the wiper area; explain subsequent care.

• Crack up to 15 cm — from 95 ₾.
• Crack 15–30 cm — from 140 ₾, subject to inspection; repair is not always worthwhile.

Damage in the driver’s view, near an edge, with missing glass, affected inner glass or interlayer, or near a camera and other glass features needs particular care. Unsuitable damage may lead to a recommendation to seek replacement. ADAS does not mean automatic refusal or exemption from checks: vehicle requirements matter.

What if the chip is left unchecked?

Rain may introduce contamination; temperature changes and loads may contribute to spreading. A fixed growth rate or a guaranteed crack after a month cannot be predicted.

Do not test the chip by pressing it or try drilling and household fillers. Material already applied can complicate assessment and subsequent work; tell the technician about it.

Ask the studio about suitable temporary protection before your visit. Do not choose adhesive tape or chemicals at random. If visibility is impaired, discuss how the vehicle can be brought for assessment.

Up to 1 cm starts at 60 ₾; 1–2 cm at 80 ₾. A crack means assessing the whole break: up to 15 cm starts at 95 ₾, and 15–30 cm at 140 ₾ after inspection if repair is worthwhile. Agree the final price before work.

How long does repair take?

The usual chip estimate is 20–30 minutes. Condition and complexity can change it; crack-repair time follows inspection. This does not promise a walk-in appointment.

Will the repaired area still be visible?

A mark can remain. Shape, filling and contamination affect the result; even a fresh chip cannot be promised complete invisibility. The technician considers its potential effect on the driver’s view.

Can I drive for months with a chip?

A photo or small size cannot confirm safe use. Damage can change; impaired visibility or spreading needs specialist assessment. A repair inspection is not a guarantee of passing a vehicle inspection.

How does professional repair differ from a DIY kit?

Inspection, appropriate materials, filling and final checks all matter. A kit does not establish repairability. If you have used one, tell the technician about the material left in the break.
