A film edge lifted after a year — six possible causes

PPF edge peeling isn't a verdict on the film but a signal of a specific problem. Prep, chemistry, impact. Diagnostics and repair.

Edge peeling is the most common complaint about PPF 6-18 months after installation. The film edge on a hood, door handle or mirror lifts 1-3 millimeters, adhesive becomes visible, dust and dirt start clogging under the edge. It is not a verdict on the entire film but a signal of a specific problem that either happened during installation or in use. Below — six main causes of peeling, what premium brand warranty covers, and how it is repaired at the studio.

What edge peeling is and why it matters

The edge is the most vulnerable spot on any PPF. In the middle of a panel the film is glued over a large area, adhesive holds it firmly on the paint, and peeling there is only possible under serious impact. At the edge (at a molding junction, at a cut line along the hood shape, around a door handle) the glued area is minimal, and any force acting on the edge concentrates there.

When an edge lifts 1-3 mm the problem is not only cosmetic. Dust, water, and road salt clog under the lifted edge. Dirt works like a wedge — gradually widens the peeling, and over 3-6 months a small lift turns into full film separation from the panel. That is why peeling must be noticed and fixed early, not "left to wait".

The second critical point — risk of spreading to neighbouring panels. If the film is lifting off the hood and exposing adhesive, a customer might accidentally catch the free edge during the next wash, pull on it, and tear the film off completely or from an adjacent panel. That is no longer a cosmetic issue but direct money on re-installation.

The third point — paint under the peel. Fresh adhesive shields paint from direct contact with de-icers and UV. When the edge is lifted and adhesive is exposed, that narrow strip of paint under the peel becomes vulnerable. Over a few seasons local yellowing or fading can appear exactly in that zone.

Six causes: from prep to use

Peeling does not happen "just because". There is always a specific cause, and understanding it helps both diagnose and prevent recurrence.

Cause 1: insufficient surface prep. The most common. If the installer did not degrease the paint before applying film or poorly washed the panel after dealer prep, silicones, wax, or polishing compound residue remained on the surface. PPF adhesive bonds poorly to these — in the first weeks the film holds, but 3-12 months later it starts lifting at the edges where bond load is highest. Fix — full re-installation with proper prep. Detailed prep guidance — in the new-car PPF article.

Cause 2: aggressive wash in the first 7 days. PPF adhesive reaches final strength in 7-14 days (with UV activation — 24-48 hours, without — longer). If the car went through a high-pressure wash during this period, especially with the nozzle aimed at the film edge, the adhesive had not yet set, and the film begins peeling along the water impact line. This is not a warranty case — it's a use-instruction violation. Fix — panel re-wrap at the customer's cost.

Cause 3: cheap adhesive (Chinese film). On budget films the adhesive is made from less durable polymers. In Tbilisi conditions with temperature swings from -5 in winter to 70 °C on the hood in summer, the adhesive loses elasticity and starts peeling at the edges. Typically shows up at month 12-18 and progresses fast. The solution on cheap film is usually one — replacement with premium film, because edge repair won't stop further peeling.

Cause 4: mechanical impacts and scratches on the edge. The film edge is especially vulnerable to physical action. Careless door opening in tight parking, a strong water jet on the edge, brushing the edge, a car-wash rail at the wrong height — all can undermine adhesive locally. Fix — local repair: edge is heated with a heat gun, adhesive is reactivated, the film is pressed back. Works if peeling is no older than 2-3 weeks and not contaminated.

Cause 5: factory defect in the film. Rare but happens. Adhesive layer defect from the manufacturer — usually shows up in the first 3-6 months, not on one panel but symmetrically on several. Premium brands (Llumar, LuxArmor, Quantum) in this case provide new film under warranty for free, and the studio does the work at cost or a reduced rate.

Cause 6: extreme use in the mountains. Stones and gravel hitting the film edge at high speed on Georgian mountain roads (Kazbegi route, passes) can locally undermine adhesive under the edge. That is not the film's fault or an install defect — just physical action at the edge of material capability. Fix — local edge repair or local film section replacement.

Correct cause diagnosis is the studio technician's job at in-person inspection. By the character of the peel (symmetric or not, when it started, which panel) an experienced installer identifies the cause in 10-15 minutes.

What premium brand warranties cover

All three brands BESTAUTO works with — Llumar, LuxArmor and Quantum — offer 10-year manufacturer warranty. But warranty is not unconditional — it covers specific defect types subject to use-condition compliance.

Covered:

  • Factory defect in the film (adhesive, top-layer, thickness deviation)
  • Yellowing of clear film earlier than the 5-year mark
  • Complete loss of self-healing effect before the warranty period
  • Clouding and layer delamination without mechanical cause
  • Edge peeling caused by adhesive defect (confirmed by a technician)

Not covered:

  • Violation of the first-14-days use instructions (high-pressure wash, brush automatic)
  • Mechanical damage from impact, vandalism, contact
  • Use of incompatible chemistry (acids, aggressive solvents)
  • Damage from improper repair at other studios
  • Installation on poorly prepared paint (that falls on the installer, not the brand)

Important point — material warranty is separate from workmanship warranty. A premium brand gives 10 years on the film itself. The studio typically gives 1-2 years on its own work (install accuracy, film fit, seam quality). These two warranties work together: if the edge peeled due to install error — the studio covers it; due to film defect — the brand covers it.

Repair: re-wrap vs panel replacement

Once peeling happens, three recovery scenarios are possible depending on size and film condition.

Scenario 1: local edge repair. Applies if peeling is no more than 2-3 cm along one edge, has not been contaminated with dust, and started no more than 2-3 weeks ago. The technician heats the edge with a heat gun to 60-80 °C, reactivates the adhesive, squeezes air out with a squeegee, and presses the edge back down. Takes 30-60 minutes, usually covered by studio warranty. Does not always work — if adhesive has dried or been contaminated, repair won't yield a stable result.

Scenario 2: full-panel re-wrap. If peeling is longer than 3 cm or affects multiple edges of one panel, the film on the whole panel is replaced. Old film comes off carefully, adhesive is cleaned, panel is washed and degreased again, new film goes on. Cost is roughly 50-70% of the original install on that panel (the customer pays for material, but the template work is already in the studio's system). Takes 1 day.

Scenario 3: full re-wrap on the car. A rare scenario, applied when the problem is systemic (peeling on multiple panels simultaneously, film age 6-7 years and generally tired). All film comes off, paint is polished, new film is installed. Takes 5-7 days, cost equals a new installation. Makes sense if the film no longer performs its protective role — self-healing doesn't work, clouding appears.

Scenario choice is made at studio inspection. Come as soon as you notice peeling — the earlier, the more likely a simple local repair instead of expensive re-wrap.

How to extend the life of film edges

A few use rules that reduce peeling probability by 80-90%.

High-pressure wash — only at a direct angle. A jet at 90° to the surface does not hit the film edge. A jet at a sharp angle can go under the edge and undermine adhesive. Distance from nozzle to edge — minimum 30 cm.

Avoid automatic brush washes. Brushes work around the panel perimeter and often run directly over the film edge — an ideal peeling scenario. For cars with PPF, touchless wash or hand wash with a spray gun is preferred.

Annual studio check. A 10-minute technician inspection once a year reveals early signs of peeling the owner would not notice. At that stage local repair is free or minimal cost.

Don't scrub the edge. If dust or sand got under the edge, don't scrub with a brush — that will deepen peeling. Rinse with hose water at a direct angle, dry with microfibre. If dirt is embedded, visit the studio instead of trying to clean it yourself.

Watch the first 48 hours after install. Adhesive hasn't set, film is especially vulnerable. If in those 2 days there was a sharp temperature change (car in the sun, then into a cold garage), adhesive may cure unevenly. That is a common cause of peels months later. Fix — park in shade or a stable-temperature garage the first 2 days.

Don't apply wax or polish on edges. Any product getting under the film edge contaminates the adhesive and reduces its bond to the paint. If waxing the car after film installation — stay 1-2 cm away from the film boundary.

When peeling is normal, and when it isn't

Not every edge behavior needs repair. A few cases look like peeling but aren't.

Film "settling" in the first 2-4 weeks. During this period adhesive is still polymerising, and film may slightly "pull" along the shape — the edge shifts 0.5-1 mm. Normal, no action needed. If after a month the shift hasn't worsened — all fine.

Visual gap on complex shapes. In spots where film wraps a complex relief (radius corner, vent opening, molding boundary) a thin visual gap of 0.5-1 mm may remain — that isn't peeling but a technology-planned margin. It does not progress.

Matte "haze" along the edge at certain light angles. On gloss film a visual light-refraction effect can appear right at the cut line, resembling matte. That is optics, not a film problem — the edge is flat by touch.

Real peeling has three signs: adhesive is visible (not just the film edge), the edge lifts with a fingernail without resistance, there is progression — the peel grows over time (week to week). If at least two of three are present — it's a real problem, time for the studio.

FAQ

If the film edge has lifted, can the car be driven normally?

Yes, with restrictions. Driving is fine, but high-pressure wash and brush automatic washes must be excluded entirely until repair. A water jet can go under the lifted edge and expand the peel to full separation from the panel. Book the studio within 2-3 weeks — that is the optimal window for local repair.

How much does lifted-edge repair cost?

Depends on size and cause. Local repair of 1-3 cm of edge under studio warranty is usually free. If re-wrap of the entire panel is needed and the cause is non-warranty (e.g. use violation), cost is calculated from panel size: from 600 ₾ for a fender, from 800 ₾ for a hood, from 900 ₾ for a bumper. Exact amount — at in-person inspection.

Why did the peel appear only after a year?

Usually it is a delayed reaction to a prep or film quality issue. Adhesive holds until enough stress accumulates in the system from Tbilisi temperature cycles (summer 70 °C — winter -5 °C). On well-prepared paint with premium adhesive that stress is absorbed for 10 years. On poorly prepared paint — 12-18 months.

Can I re-glue the edge myself?

Not recommended. Household glue is unsuitable for PPF (different composition, incompatible with polyurethane). The technician uses specific primers and heat to reactivate the native adhesive — more subtle than "glue it down". Self-repair attempts usually escalate to needing a full panel re-wrap instead of a simple edge repair.

What if peeling is detected after the warranty period?

Repair at the studio's standard rate. Local single-edge repair — quoted as a separate line at inspection, full panel re-wrap — per price list for that panel. Past warranty (5-7 years of use), peeling is usually from natural adhesive aging, and it makes sense to plan full film replacement alongside repair in the coming years.

Conclusion

PPF edge peeling is a widespread but solvable issue. In most cases the cause isn't the film itself but surface prep or use violation in the first 14 days. Premium brands (Llumar, LuxArmor, Quantum) cover adhesive and top-layer defects for 10 years; the studio covers its installation work. Early detection most often leads to a local edge repair in 30-60 minutes; advanced cases require panel re-wrap.

Best strategy — annual studio check, careful washing without brushes or high pressure at a sharp angle to edges, attention to the first 14 days after install. In this mode film edges live the full service life without issues.

Key takeaways:

  • Edge peeling usually appears at 6-18 months and has a specific cause
  • Three common causes: poor prep, first-14-days violation, cheap adhesive
  • Premium warranty (Llumar, LuxArmor, Quantum) covers material defects for 10 years
  • Early repair — local adhesive reactivation with a heat gun in 30-60 minutes
  • Annual studio checks prevent progression to panel re-wrap
