Highly recommend! Professional staff, flawless detailing, and my car has never looked better
The request "come to my office, fix the windshield in an hour" lands a few times a week. Customer logic is plain: car parked at a business centre, driving across town to our studio through traffic costs two or three hours. Logic is plain, but the answer is one: BESTAUTO does not do mobile car glass repair, and that is not laziness or greed — it is about the result. Mobile chip repair on an open car park gives a predictably worse outcome than a studio repair, and "worse" often means "three months later, a crack, and the repair becomes a replacement". Below — why, what physically differs between the two environments, and what to do if the car genuinely cannot reach the studio.

What chip repair needs that the street does not have
Polymer resin, the chemistry that physically restores windshield strength, has three hard requirements on its environment.
Temperature. Resin has a working window of roughly +18-25°C. Colder, it is too viscous and does not fill the chip's capillaries to the end. Warmer, it polymerises on the surface before reaching depth. Our studio runs climate control to +22°C year-round. Outside in Tbilisi: glass on a sunny summer day reaches +50°C; a winter morning can be +5°C. Either kills the chemistry.
Humidity. Polymer resin does not like water. If a drop of rain or condensation from cold glass enters the chip before injection, the resin will not bond to the walls and a month or two later a crack opens from the repair. Our studio holds 40-50% relative humidity by AC. An open Tbilisi car park after morning rain — 90% RH, invisible to the eye.
Cleanliness. This is the big one. The air on any car park is dust. Concrete micro-particles, diesel soot, pollen. They land in a chip in seconds, and the resin then "seals" them in — visible against the light as a hazy spot. In the studio, air is filtered, the bay is closed, glass is degreased with isopropyl alcohol before work. Outside, you can degrease the glass, but a fresh layer of dust settles in 30 seconds.
To those three add a fourth — light. UV curing wants controlled 365 nm output from a lamp; sunlight UV works but unevenly (a passing cloud, the car's orientation — the lamp is hidden). Outdoors, polymerisation runs slower, longer, and unpredictably.
Why mobile service is risky
A handful of operators in Tbilisi advertise mobile windshield repair — they show up at your car park, set up an injector, and "do" the chip in 40 minutes. Technically possible, and on rare days (warm, dry, windless, experienced technician) it gives an acceptable result. But industry data — roughly 40-60% of mobile repairs crack again within a year, against under 5% for studio repairs.
Main mobile-repair failure modes:
- wind tears the protective film off the injector and drops dust in
- cold morning — resin does not penetrate fully
- glass heated unevenly by sun — one side +40°C, the other +25°C, resin behaves erratically
- chip cannot be properly dried — no heat gun on hand
- no humidity control — after overnight rain there is condensation in the chip cavity
None of those failure modes are visible to the customer. The technician sets the injector, injects, lights the lamp, trims excess — outwardly indistinguishable from a studio job. Two or three months later, when a crack has run, the technician stops answering the phone. Our experience: roughly 30-40% of customers who walk in with a "previously repaired" chip that has cracked had a mobile repair done.
Replacement after that "repair" still costs the same several thousand lari, plus the wasted mobile-repair fee. So BESTAUTO does not run a mobile service on principle — not because we cannot (an injector physically fits in a case), but because we will not sell a service that fails the customer half the time. Book a studio windshield chip repair via the form or by phone — intake takes 5 minutes, repair an hour.
Case study: under-the-wind repair vs studio
In September 2025 a customer came to us — a truck driver who had a mobile repair done a month earlier on a parking lot across town. The chip was an 8 mm bullseye, the work cost 50 ₾ done by "a guy with an injector". Three weeks in, the customer noticed a thin 3 cm crack running from the old repair. Another week — 12 cm.
At intake the typical mobile "quality" was visible: the repair point had a dark patch inside (dirt that landed before injection), surrounded by a grey halo of incomplete polymerisation (resin failing to bond to the chip walls because of moisture traces). All visible under close light inspection.
We offered the customer a path: try a second repair in the studio (95 ₾ for a 12 cm crack) with an honest disclaimer — 60-70% success rate, because the existing "dirty" resin inside might not let the new resin bond cleanly. The customer agreed. We worked in a climate-controlled bay; new resin filled over the old, UV lamp for 12 minutes. Six months on, the crack is not growing, the customer is happy — but he could have spent 60 ₾ instead of 95 + 50 = 145 if he had come straight to us.
Take-away: mobile repair is cheaper "in the moment", statistically more expensive over a year. Studio repair at 60-95 ₾ is a 10-year insurance.
What to do if you cannot drive in
Real situations where the car physically cannot reach the studio:
- the crack has already opened up, driving further is dangerous (vibration could shatter the glass)
- the car is on a trip out of town, picked up the chip on the road, getting back to Tbilisi means hundreds of extra km
- a large commercial vehicle for which a day at the studio means lost revenue
In each of those, there is an algorithm we recommend as the "second-best" — what maximises the odds of a successful follow-up repair.
One — isolate the chip from the environment. Wide clear tape (not coloured, not matte) goes carefully over the chip on the outside of the glass. It keeps dust, moisture and salt slush out. The tape holds 5-7 days without issues, then starts peeling under UV. Replace it before the edges lift.
Two — do not heat-shock the glass. No max heater on cold glass in winter, no hot water on ice. Sharp temperature swings are the single biggest driver of chip-to-crack growth. If you must drive in winter — heater on medium, directed at feet, not at the glass.
Three — do not slam doors. Door slams send a shock wave through the body that shows up on the windshield as an impulse stress in the chip zone. Not critical for a small chip, dangerous if the damage is already non-trivial.
With that protection a car can drive 1-2 weeks without significant chip growth, after which a studio booking is mandatory.
Tow truck and temporary protection
If the situation is critical — the crack is already large, driving is dangerous — the car can be delivered by tow truck. In Tbilisi a city tow is available through independent services at a moderate price. Against a several-thousand-lari replacement, that pays back instantly.
Algorithm:
- Tape the chip immediately after the impact.
- Call a tow truck — flatbed, with a winch, not a hook tow.
- Deliver the car to either of our studios (Guramishvili or Politkovskaya).
- At intake the technician assesses: repair-feasible or replacement-only.
- If repair — an hour of work and you take the car back (also possible to tow back if you prefer not to drive on a freshly-repaired glass).
This works particularly well for commercial vehicles: for a taxi a day in studio plus two-way tow (200 ₾) is far cheaper than the several thousand lari of replacement once the crack has grown. Book damage assessment and windshield repair through the service-page form.
Conclusion
Mobile windshield repair in Tbilisi is physically possible but statistically loses to studio repair by 5 to 10 times in success rate. It is an environment problem: resin needs controlled temperature, low humidity and clean air, and those three conditions do not exist on a business-centre car park. BESTAUTO works in-studio only — not as posture, but as honesty with the customer.
If the studio is genuinely unreachable — there is a temporary-protection algorithm (tape, gentle driving, no thermal shock) and a tow option that, for serious damage, pays back instantly against replacement. The thing to avoid is doing the repair "outside" and letting the chip grow.
Key takeaways:
- Polymer resin needs +18-25°C, 40-50% RH and clean air — none of that is on an open car park
- Mobile repair re-cracks in 40-60% of cases vs under 5% for studio
- BESTAUTO does not offer mobile repair on principle, for the customer's outcome
- If you cannot drive in — tape the chip, drive carefully, no thermal shock
- A tow in Tbilisi pays back instantly against a multi-thousand-lari replacement
FAQ
Does BESTAUTO offer mobile windshield repair?
No. We work in-studio only in Tbilisi, Georgia. Not because we are unwilling but because a quality chip repair needs a controlled environment (+22°C, 40-50% RH, clean air) that does not exist on a car park. Outdoor mobile repairs re-crack in 40-60% of cases — we will not sell a service with that statistic. Book a studio windshield repair via the form or by phone.
Can a chip be repaired in my driveway or office car park?
Technically yes, an injector fits in a case and several Tbilisi operators work that way. But the result is unpredictable: dust enters the resin, wind lifts the film, glass at +50°C under sun breaks the polymerisation chemistry. Two to three months on, that "repair" often becomes a crack and replacement runs into the thousands. The recommendation is to spend the hour and drive to a studio.
What do I do if the glass has already cracked badly and driving is risky?
Isolate the crack with clear tape on the outside (keeps dust and moisture out), avoid sharp heating or cooling, do not slam doors. Drive in calmly if the crack is sub-30 cm and not at the edge, or call a tow truck through any independent service. At intake we assess whether the damage is repair-feasible or already replacement-only.
How long can a car be driven with a tape-protected chip?
With clear tape and gentle driving — 1-2 weeks without significant growth. Beyond that, the tape starts peeling under UV and dust and moisture re-enter the chip. After 2 weeks the odds of a clean repair drop: even in studio, resin may not bond perfectly to an already contaminated surface. Tape is a temporary measure to a studio booking, not a permanent fix.
Can I get a chip re-repaired that a "mobile guy" did and that has cracked again?
Yes, with reduced odds. Old resin inside the chip creates a barrier the new resin does not pass cleanly. In our practice the success rate of a second repair on top of a first is around 60-70% vs 95% for first-time studio repair. If a first "mobile" repair has already cracked — best to do the studio repair right away, before the crack grows further.
