Poor night visibility through the windshield: what to check before polishing

If oncoming headlights produce more glare and the windshield has haze or wiper marks, check the glass condition. Dirt, micro-scratches, impact marks and internal defects can look similar under different lighting but require different actions.

These symptoms do not prove that glass is the only cause. Inspection helps assess the glass itself and select suitable work. Polishing cannot be promised to resolve every night visibility problem.

Four possible glass problems

• Micro-scratches. Fine surface marks, sometimes along the wiper path. They can be more noticeable in headlights than in daylight.
• Small impact marks. Pits from particles and stones that may scatter light. They are not treated as equivalent to fine scratches.
• Dirt or surface film. Streaks, product residues, mineral deposits and insect marks may reduce clarity.
• Internal defects. Clouding, bubbles or separation between layers require assessment of the glass itself.

Several causes may coexist. Vehicle age, a pit count or a rough feeling does not provide a ready diagnosis or determine acceptable treatment depth.

Micro-scratches and wiper marks

Hard particles under blades, wiping dry dirty glass and dirty cleaning tools may leave marks. A damaged blade edge also impairs cleaning. Inspect the glass and blades together instead of assuming every fan-shaped mark has a single cause.

Specialised glass polishing may help with suitable surface defects. The method, compound and treatment extent depend on surface condition. A universal removal depth does not guarantee the result or preservation of optical quality.

Pits and small impact wear

Numerous small impact marks differ from scratches in character and depth. Routes and use affect their condition, but vehicle age cannot predict the number of defects or promise a clarity restoration timeline.

Inspection assesses location, depth and overall glass condition. Polishing or grinding may be considered for some suitable defects; for others treatment is not worthwhile. A price category or exterior roughness does not prove that a defect can be removed.

Dirt and film: consider cleaning first

Streaks may be on the outside or inside. Check both sides: an interior deposit can still affect the view after the exterior has been cleaned.

• Product and wax residues. May follow an unsuitable cleaner or tool, or incomplete removal of a product.
• Mineral marks. Water and road-deposit stains are assessed before choosing a cleaner.
• Road salt and grime. Residues after a journey should be removed with a method suited to the glass.
• Insects. Dried marks are softened and cleaned without rubbing hard particles across the surface.

Correct cleaning can be considered first. The product must suit the glass, coating and surrounding parts. Different deposits call for a suitable cleaning method; polishing is not needed after every wash.

If marks remain after cleaning, reassessment is needed. Not every remaining defect is a scratch. A detailing wash and polishing are different jobs; the cleaning scope and cost for the actual case are clarified before booking.

Clouding or separation inside the glass

A windshield usually has a layered construction. An internal visible patch, bubbles or changes to a layer are not corrected by removing material from the exterior surface.

A torch and views from different sides help show the issue to a specialist, but a fingernail test identifies neither the precise cause nor repair suitability. A smooth exterior alone does not prove an internal defect.

Suspected layer damage requires assessment of replacement. Polishing or grinding should not be sold as a way to remove any clouding. Chips and cracks are considered separately: when repair or replacement is chosen.

Care after city and out-of-town journeys

Conditions vary in Tbilisi and on journeys outside the city. For care, the actual contamination and blade condition are more useful than assigning the glass a fixed lifespan.

• In hot weather, avoid abrupt temperature changes during cleaning; follow the car and product instructions.
• After a trip, remove dried insect deposits with an appropriate method.
• After winter roads, clean salt and grime without using metal to scrape the glass.
• After dusty parking, do not use the wipers as a dry brush over sand.
• After rural or mountain roads, check for new damage; a route does not establish a universal wear rate.

Replace blades according to their condition and manufacturer requirements. New blades help cleaning but do not remove existing scratches. Hydrophobic treatment is a separate coating from 150 ₾, not defect repair; need and compatibility are assessed separately.

These are different items, not one package for every piece of glass. Final price and the expected result are agreed after inspection. Chips and cracks have separate repair rates: a chip up to 1 cm from 60 ₾, 1–2 cm from 80 ₾; a crack up to 15 cm from 95 ₾, 15–30 cm from 140 ₾ after inspection when worthwhile.
