Windshield glass polishing: micro-scratches, oncoming headlight halos and the fix

Cerium oxide, 3-7 microns of surface removed, polishing at 250 ₾ vs grinding at 400 ₾ — where the line sits and when each technology applies.

Five years of driving in Tbilisi and the windshield is no longer "clear". In daylight it is invisible, but after dark, under oncoming headlights, a lattice of hundreds of fine strokes appears: halos around every light source, an oily glare on a puddle up ahead, worse visibility of the road markings and kerbs. These are micro-scratches from wiper blades, grit on the blades, improper washing. Windshield glass polishing is the technology that physically removes the top 3-7 microns of glass and restores optical clarity. Not to be confused with grinding (30-100 microns, different machine, different cost) or replacement (far from always necessary). Below — where the micro-scratches come from, how cerium-oxide polishing works, when it helps, when it no longer saves, and how to compare polishing with grinding.

Where windshield micro-scratches come from

Glass is a much softer surface than it feels. On Mohs, automotive glass is 5.5, and anything in nature harder than 5.5 leaves marks on it. In Tbilisi, there are many such sources.

Wiper blades. The rubber edge of a blade does not scratch glass on its own. But when a grain of sand sits on the blade (picked up at the last wash or the car park), every wipe across the glass is sanding with that grain. After a Tbilisi winter of salt-and-sand slush on the blades, the glass usually shows a "halo" in the wiper arc — fan-shaped micro-strokes, plainly visible in rear-lamp light.

Sand and dust. Tbilisi summers after a windy day leave a layer of fine mountain dust on the windshield. If the driver hits the wipers to "wipe the dust" without washer fluid, the blades drag the sand across the glass, scoring it. Same story in winter with salt de-icer.

Incorrect washing. At cheaper car washes the glass sometimes gets wiped with the sponge that just cleaned the wheels. On the wheels: road dirt with sand, fine gravel, brake-pad particles. That sponge leaves a web of micro-scratches across the glass in a single wash.

Pit pitting. Not scratches exactly but little craters from tiny stone impacts on the road. Over time enough of them accumulate that the glass looks "matte" in headlight light.

All four are cumulative. A 5-year car in Tbilisi without special measures — micro-scratches guaranteed. On a new car they are weaker thanks to the perfectly smooth factory glass; on a 7-10-year-old used car they genuinely hamper visibility at night.

How polishing works: cerium oxide and the mechanics

Windshield polishing is soft grinding at micron scale. The compound is cerium oxide (CeO₂) — a mineral that reacts chemically with silicon dioxide in glass and physically smooths the micro-relief.

Process:

  • Assessment. Glass examined under a directional lamp with bay lights dimmed. Micro-scratch zones are identified (usually the wiper arc and driver's line-of-sight area) and any pit-pitting zones noted.
  • Cleaning. Glass washed, degreased. Any dirt during polishing turns into an abrasive that can add scratches instead of removing them.
  • Masking. Body around the glass is wrapped with film and masking tape — cerium paste splashes eat paint. Trim seals and wiper blades are also covered.
  • Compound application. Paste goes onto a felt pad on a polisher (low revs, 800-1500 rpm). Glass polishers are specialised — not the same as paint polishers; pads are firmer, water feed is mandatory.
  • The polishing itself. A water-fed polisher runs over the micro-scratch zones. A 3-7 micron layer is removed (a fraction of a hair's thickness). 30-60 minutes per windshield.
  • Rinse. Paste thoroughly washed off with water, glass wiped with microfibre. Body unwrapped.
  • Check. Result inspected under a lamp on a dark background. A good result is glass that looks "factory-fresh" at the right light angle.

Pricing here: windshield polishing — from 250 ₾, side-glass polishing — from 150 ₾. Full price list is on the auto glass repair page. Procedure takes 1-1.5 hours for a full car (4 pieces of glass).

Polishing 250 ₾ vs grinding 400 ₾ — the difference

Customers often conflate "polishing" and "grinding" of windshields. The difference is two numbers: the layer thickness removed and, consequently, the defect class it handles.

Polishing — 3-7 microns. The range of micro-scratches from wipers, mild pit pitting, light haze from chemistry. Only the upper slightly damaged glass layer comes off. Glass stays structurally sound, optically undistorted, seals remain in place. 250 ₾ for the windshield.

Grinding — 30-100 microns. Serious wear: deep scratches from scraping ice with a scraper, heavy pit pitting, etched patches from acid rain or de-icer chemistry. A noticeable glass layer comes off, and that requires care — the glass is slightly thinner afterwards, and in extreme cases replacement may be needed if grinding has eaten too much of the overall thickness. 400 ₾ for the windshield.

How to choose: under a directional lamp at night (in a bay or under a yard floodlight) look at the glass. Fine fan-shaped strokes and a light "haze" — polishing. Individual scratches at a nail-catching depth, "matte patches", felt as relief when running a hand across — grinding.

In 80% of walk-in cases polishing is enough. Grinding is more common on commercial vehicles (taxis, delivery) after many years of service when the glass is "beat up" by scrapers and chemistry but replacement is not budget-justified yet.

When polishing will not help

Polishing is not a universal fix. It does not handle:

Chips. Any chip, whatever the size, is not a scratch but a local structural break. Polishing will smooth the edges of a chip but the chip itself stays. A chip needs its own technology — polymer resin injection (from 60 ₾).

Cracks. Same story. Polishing will not "catch" crack edges, and trying to "polish out" a crack accelerates its growth from the pad's local heating.

Pit-pitting from heavy gravel. If the glass has heavy "buckshot" (500+ small craters), polishing smooths the edges but the haze remains. That is grinding, or replacement.

Optical distortion. If the glass already has "waves" (thickness non-uniformity visible as horizon-line distortion against the light), polishing does not fix that. It is a factory defect or the result of strong overheating; only replacement corrects it.

Internal laminate defects. Bubbles between glass layers, cloudiness, delamination — all irreversible; polishing and grinding work on the outer surface only.

In the driver's line of sight, polishing is possible but cautious: after 2-3 repeats over the years, enough material is cumulatively removed that the glass can start producing mild optical distortion. We typically recommend polishing in the driver's zone no more than once every 3-4 years.

Prevention: how to delay the next polishing

After polishing the glass is "factory-fresh" — but without prevention, another polishing is due in 2-3 years. To stretch it:

Change blades every 6-8 months. Cheap blades lose rubber faster and leave more scratches. A mid-tier blade is enough; rubber compound matters more than the brand.

Never run wipers on dry glass. Rule number one. Always washer fluid first, wipers second. Tbilisi makes this especially important after dusty days.

Correct washing. At a wash, ask for a separate clean sponge for the glass (not the one that just cleaned the wheels). At home: two buckets — one with glass foam, one for rinsing. Do not use one rag for glass and bodywork.

No metal ice scraper. Any metal scratches the glass guaranteed. Plastic scrapers also leave marks, but finer. Best option: thaw from a warm cabin (heater on medium for 5-10 minutes) plus a soft snow brush.

Hydrophobic coating. "Rain-off" (from 150 ₾ here) creates a water-repellent layer that partially shields the glass from dirt and makes sand rinse off easier. Not direct scratch protection, but it reduces how much the wipers are used — and therefore how many scratches they leave.

With prevention, polishing runs on a 4-5-year cadence instead of 2-3. In practice — 250 ₾ saved every other year, plus better visibility the whole time.

Conclusion

Windshield polishing is not cosmetics — it is a functional procedure that affects night and rain safety. Micro-scratches from wipers, sand and wrong washing accumulate over 3-5 years of Tbilisi driving to the point where every oncoming headlight produces a visible halo. Cerium-oxide polishing removes 3-7 microns of glass and restores optical clarity — 250 ₾ per job.

Grinding (400 ₾) is a different category for deeper damage. Do not confuse them: if in doubt, come in, under the lamp the difference between "still polishable" and "already grinding" is obvious in a minute. For a chip or a crack, neither fits — you need resin injection (from 60 ₾) or replacement.

Key takeaways:

  • Windshield polishing removes 3-7 microns at 250 ₾, clears micro-scratches and mild pit pitting
  • Grinding removes 30-100 microns at 400 ₾ for deep scratches and serious wear
  • Polishing does not handle chips, cracks, internal laminate defects
  • Prevention: new blades every 6-8 months, washer fluid before wipers, hydrophobic coating
  • In the driver's line of sight, polish no more than once every 3-4 years

FAQ

How much does windshield polishing cost in Tbilisi?

Windshield polishing — from 250 ₾, side-glass polishing — from 150 ₾. Per-pane procedure time 30-60 minutes. Full pricing is on the auto glass services page. The final figure for your car is set at the free under-the-lamp inspection (5 minutes), where we assess scratch depth and decide whether polishing is enough or grinding is needed.

How does polishing differ from glass grinding?

By layer thickness and defect range. Polishing removes 3-7 microns with cerium oxide — clears micro-scratches, wiper arcs, mild pit pitting. Grinding removes 30-100 microns — handles deep scratches from scrapers, acid etching, heavy pit pitting. Polishing 250 ₾, grinding 400 ₾ for the windshield. 80% of walk-ins get by with polishing.

Will polishing remove the halos around oncoming headlights at night?

If the halos are from wiper micro-scratches or mild haze — yes, it will. If the halos are from internal laminate cloudiness (rare, on very old glass) — no, that is replacement. If the halos are from misaligned oncoming headlights — also no, different problem. At the directional-lamp inspection we show you exactly which defects are on your glass.

How often can a windshield be polished?

In the driver's line of sight — no more than once every 3-4 years, because each polishing removes 3-7 microns and over many rounds a measurable thickness loss accumulates. Side and rear glass — can be polished more often, optics for the driver are not critical there. With prevention (good blades, washer fluid before wipers) polishing is typically a 4-5-year cadence.

Can I polish the glass myself with sandpaper or abrasive?

No, categorically. The finest sandpaper (P2000) leaves deeper marks than wiper micro-scratches. You get matte "etching" instead of improvement. Cerium-oxide paste is a specialised mineral that reacts with the silicon in the glass at a chemical level, not just scrubbing mechanically. You also need a glass polisher with a dedicated pad and water feed. DIY "home polishing" is a reliable route to paying for a replacement.
