Where micro-scratches come from

How glass polishing works

Glass requires suitable specialist compounds, including cerium-oxide pastes. An appropriate treatment system addresses surface marks. Selection depends on the defect, glass and existing coatings; a paint-polishing compound is not automatically suitable for glass.

The aim is to improve the surface while retaining an acceptable view. There is no universal removed-layer thickness for every polishing job: materials, methods and work vary. If suitable treatment cannot produce the required result, other options need discussing.

Seven work stages

1. Assessment. Examine the glass under suitable lighting: scratches, pits, dirt, coatings and the view from the driver’s seat.
2. Cleaning. Remove contamination that could interfere with assessment and treatment.
3. Protect surrounding surfaces. Prepare the body, seals and other nearby areas for the chosen compound.
4. Choose a system. Select compounds, tools and settings for the defect and follow the system’s instructions.
5. Treatment. Work on suitable areas while monitoring the surface and heat; the scope depends on glass condition.
6. Remove residue. Clean off the working compound in accordance with the system.
7. Check. Assess remaining marks and optical quality, including the driver’s view. Explain the result and subsequent care.

Time depends on the area, defect depth, chosen work and glass condition. Confirm the timing for your vehicle at assessment and discuss the result before treatment starts.

Polishing or grinding: how to choose

Polishing

Consider it for suitable shallow surface scratches and marks. Not every spot needs polishing: first distinguish contamination or deposits from surface damage. Windshield polishing starts from 200 ₾.

Grinding

More pronounced surface defects may require additional abrasive work followed by finishing. Suitability needs a separate assessment: surface evenness and the view must be considered. Windshield grinding starts from 250 ₾.

A nail-catching scratch or matte patch does not determine the method alone. The technician assesses depth, area, location, layers, coatings and previous treatment. More intensive work is not always preferable to polishing or replacement.

When polishing is not enough

• A chip. Assess it for separate repair; polishing does not replace resin filling of suitable damage. Repair of a chip up to 1 cm starts from 60 ₾.
• A crack. Surface polishing and grinding are not crack repair. For 15–30 cm, inspection comes first and repair starts from 140 ₾ when worthwhile.
• Numerous impact pits. Depth and position may limit the outcome. Choosing treatment or replacement requires assessment rather than counting up to a fixed number.
• Optical distortion. If the surface already distorts straight lines or the view, establish the cause. Polishing cannot be promised to solve it.
• Clouding or delamination between layers. Exterior treatment does not remove a defect inside laminated glass.

In the driver’s viewing area, the expected result and risk of surface distortion need particular attention. Repeat treatment depends on current condition and work history, with no universal permitted number of jobs or calendar interval.

If treatment is unsuitable, discuss choosing repair or replacement. Obtain replacement pricing separately from its provider; it is not included in polishing prices.

Care and prevention after polishing

• Check blades. Clean them and replace them when worn or no longer working well, following manufacturer guidance. One replacement interval does not suit all conditions.
• Do not wipe dust with dry wipers. Use appropriate washer fluid and remove contamination first; keep enough fluid available.
• Use clean washing tools. Avoid transferring wheel or other dirt to the glass. Do not rub grit across it with a dirty cloth.
• Remove ice carefully. Use the vehicle’s demisting system and tools as recommended by its manufacturer. Avoid improvised metal objects, excessive pressure or sudden heating with hot water.
