Winter windshield care: defrosting and damage assessment

Before cold weather, check your windshield, wipers and washer system. For a trip from Tbilisi into the mountains, consider the whole route: clear city glass does not mean there will be no ice at your overnight stop. An existing chip or crack needs a separate assessment; surface care does not replace repair.

Three winter windshield tasks

• Remove ice and mist with the vehicle's intended features to restore visibility.
• Clean road dirt from glass and blades, and check the rubber and washer operation.
• Have damage assessed, especially if it changes or affects your view.

Preventive care helps maintain visibility and identify problems earlier. It cannot guarantee protection against a new stone impact or an existing crack spreading.

Defrosting and warming the windshield

Use demisting and defrosting as described in your vehicle manual. For example, the Volvo S60 manual provides for airflow and electric windshield heating. Available features and controls depend on the model.

There is no universal rule to keep airflow off the glass for the first 10 minutes. Do not replace the vehicle's defrost function by pouring hot water on the glass. Drive only after clearing the windows and restoring visibility; discuss the condition of an existing crack with a specialist.

The rear defroster acts on the rear window. Use the functions intended for the windshield to clear it. If ice holds the wipers in place, release them without force first and check the rubber for damage.

Road dirt, salt and surface cleaning

After a dirty road, clean the glass and blades with a compatible product. Do not rub dry grit across the surface or probe a chip with a sharp object. The specialist assesses contamination around the damage and its condition before repair.

Scrapers, wipers and winter washer fluid

Clearing ice

Use a soft brush for loose snow and an automotive plastic ice scraper with a clean, undamaged edge for ice. Do not strike ice with metal or press on a chip. If ice will not loosen, continue using the vehicle's defrost function.

Select a parking cover that fits and follow its instructions. Fit it on a clean surface; thaw a frozen cover before removing it without pulling hard. A cover alone cannot guarantee ice-free glass.

Blade condition

Check for cracks, tears and streaks that remain after cleaning. Match blades to the vehicle's fittings and requirements; use their condition and the manual to decide when to replace them. A winter label does not establish compatibility.

Choosing fluid

Choose fluid using vehicle requirements, expected route temperatures and the manufacturer's label, including dilution instructions. Colour and smell do not establish its composition or freeze resistance. The Tesla Model S manual addresses suitable washer fluid and blade cleaning and inspection separately.

If fluid or jets freeze, restore operation according to the vehicle manual. Do not continue with dirty glass while relying on an inoperative washer.

An existing chip: inspection and repair prices

Do not wait for a calendar date marking the start of winter. A specialist assesses location, depth, branches, contamination, previous repairs and glass features. Size is one factor, not automatic approval for repair.

If a crack appears or grows

Stop somewhere safe if damage obstructs your view. Keep photos and contact a specialist to assess the next steps. Do not add household glue, drill the glass yourself or press on the damage.

Neither waiting 10–15 minutes nor intervention within the first 24–48 hours guarantees that a crack will stop. Inspection determines the method and whether repair is appropriate. Does windshield care matter in Tbilisi?

Can I use electric windshield heating?
