Winter windshield care: how to keep a chip from becoming a crack

Heater thermal shock, road salt, the wrong scraper — three main winter risks. What to do so a November chip does not turn into a January crack.

A Tbilisi winter is not Siberian frost, but the swing here is sneaky: +8 °C midday, −3 °C at night, a mountain wind at dawn and salt on the Georgian Military Highway. For a windshield this is worse than steady cold: water freezes and thaws dozens of times a season, reagents eat at the edges of chips, and a heater at full blast hits a 40–50 °C delta in a minute. The result: glass that made it through summer with an invisible pebble dot gives you a half-metre crack in January. Below is winter windshield care laid out by point: what actually works, what does nothing, and where the line runs between home maintenance and a studio visit.

Three main winter risks

Winter windshield care comes down to managing three factors, each of which can turn a chip into a crack on its own.

Thermal shock. The temperature gap between the glass and the airflow hitting it. Car sat outside overnight, glass down to −3 °C. In the morning the driver climbs in, turns the heater to max aimed at the windshield, and 30 seconds later +40 °C air is blowing on the glass. A 43 °C delta in a minute is enough material for thermal shock. Laminated glass has two layers with a film between them, and the inner layer expands faster than the outer. If a barely visible micro-crack from a pebble is already there, it starts growing.

Salt and reagents. Tbilisi road crews spread a salt-sand mix on mountain sections (the Kazbegi-side approach to the city, the Military Highway). That mix ends up on the glass off the wheels of cars ahead, packs into micro-cracks and chips. Salt is an active reagent: it eats at the edges of the damage and expands it through crystallisation in micro-pores. Glass on a car that regularly runs icy roads ages faster in one winter than over two summers in normal conditions.

Mechanical load from scrapers. A plastic scraper on frozen glass is a micro-abrasive against the laminate. On healthy glass those are cosmetic scratches; on chipped glass, a direct chance to widen the damage. Metal scrapers (or a chunk of ice used as a scraper) are the worst — they deliver localised pressure that glass with micro-cracks will not survive.

Thermal shock — how to warm the glass correctly

The main rule: do it gradually.

First 10 minutes after start — heater on low, airflow to feet or face, not to the windshield. The cabin starts warming, the glass slowly catches up to near-cabin temperature. At this stage the outside of the glass is still cold but the inside delta is no longer critical.

After 10 minutes — airflow to the windshield, fan on medium. The glass warms evenly, no local spikes. Outside, ice starts melting across the full area, not only where the hot blast hits.

What not to do. Do not start with the heater on max pointed at frozen glass. Do not pour warm or hot water on the glass from outside — that is the classic way to get an edge crack. Do not flip the electric defrost on full right at start-up — a gentle warm-up via the heater is safer.

A warm cloth layer or dedicated windshield cover left on the glass overnight works if the car sleeps outside. In the morning pull the cover off, find dry glass without ice or frost, and the heater warm-up is shorter. Cost: 20–недорогой at any auto market.

Salt and reagents — what happens at chip edges

If the glass already has a chip (a pebble dot, a micro-crack), the chip lives its own winter life. Road salt lands inside the damage, crystallises, physically widens the cavity. Then melt-water gets in, freezes overnight, widens the damage further. A month of regular driving on treated roads turns a 2 mm chip into a 5 mm chip or a starting point for a crack.

The defence is simple: if a chip is visible, you repair it in a studio before subzero nights start. A chip up to 1 cm costs from 60 ₾, a 1–2 cm chip from 80 ₾. It is an industrial procedure: an injector pulls air and dirt out of the damage, fills the cavity with polymer resin, a UV lamp cures it into solid plastic. After a proper repair the chip stops being a weak spot: salt and water no longer get in, thermal shock no longer splits the damage.

If you missed the autumn visit and the chip has survived to January, repair still makes sense, but the odds of a flawless cosmetic result are lower. A step-by-step breakdown of the process sits on windshield repair. Final pricing for a specific piece of damage is set at the studio inspection.

Scraper, wipers and chemistry — what to use

Scraper. Plastic only, sharp edge but not metal. Work in short single-direction strokes (no picking), no heavy pressure. If the ice will not move — do not push harder, give the glass another 2–3 minutes of interior warm-up.

Wipers. In winter they run across crusts of ice and grime. Rubber wears faster, streaks get more visible. A winter set of wipers with rubber housings instead of metal frames (frame wipers freeze up folded and tear on power-up) works well. Affordable consumable, replaced once per season.

Washer fluid. Winter-concentration washer fluid with a freeze point below −20 °C. Summer water with washing-up liquid will freeze in the lines and nozzles and burn out the pump. A good fluid is clear, not sharp-smelling (no methanol excess). Murky fluid with a chemical smell is often fake — works worse, smells in the cabin.

What not to do. No boiling water, no warm water from a kettle, no chipping ice with a hammer or screwdriver. None of those save time — all of them are high-probability crack generators.

If a chip already exists — urgent repair before winter

The universal Tbilisi rule: all visible chips get repaired before the first freezes. Concretely — by mid-November. Each subzero night after that works against the glass.

The maths is simple. Chip up to 1 cm — from 60 ₾, 1–2 cm — from 80 ₾, crack up to 15 cm — from 95 ₾, crack 15–30 cm — from 140 ₾. Windshield replacement is done at specialised glass services and on a sensor-equipped or ADAS-camera car costs many times more than a studio chip repair. Timely auto glass repair vs later replacement: an order of magnitude.

Repair time — 30–60 minutes depending on the chip type. Process: glass prep around the damage, vacuuming with a suction-pad injector, resin injection under pressure, UV curing, trimming and final polish. All of that happens in the studio, at normal temperature — outdoor curing in winter is uneven and the resin sets badly.

Booking windshield chip repair on the first free day after you notice damage makes sense. A week's delay in November is not a delay — it is a lottery ticket with thermal shock inside.

What to do if a crack does start

Worst case: you sit down, start the heater, hear a telltale click a minute later, and a 20–30 cm line has appeared. What to do in that minute.

Right away. Turn off the heater, no hot air at the glass. Do not drive off at once — let temperatures equalise for 10–15 minutes. Do not put any water on the glass.

Same day. Book a studio inspection. A fresh crack (first 24–48 hours) can often be "stopped": a micro-trap is drilled at the crack tip, resin goes in, growth halts. That is not a full glass restoration (the line stays visible), but the crack does not grow further. Procedure is priced per the tier list on the windshield repair service page.

What not to do. Do not tape the crack with duct tape, electrical tape or household glue. Tape does not hold water, glue leaves a white haze under UV, and none of that gives the studio a clean repair surface. A "preserved" crack is harder to repair afterwards with a worse cosmetic result.

If the crack has reached the edge of the glass or sits in the driver's direct line of sight, repair will not save it — replacement only. In Georgia, a crack in the driver's zone is also a formal reason for a failed safety inspection.

FAQ

Is special winter prep for the windshield needed in Tbilisi, Georgia?

Yes, but not in the form of an "antifreeze coating" from an ad — in the form of inspections and repairs. By November: visual chip and micro-crack check under a lamp, repair of everything found, wiper replacement, winter washer fluid with a freeze point below −20 °C. The chip itself is not sealed with a "protective layer" — no consumer chemistry does that. Only industrial injector-plus-resin repair works.

Can the glass be warmed via the rear defroster or the electric front defrost?

Electric front defrost (where available) is safer than the heater because it warms the glass evenly from inside without a high-delta airflow. Still, full power in the first minute is not advised — give it 5–7 minutes in a gentle mode first. The rear defroster has no effect on the windshield.

What if the chip is noticed mid-winter, in January?

Repair it as soon as possible. Yes, a winter repair is slightly less clean than an autumn one: the glass needs longer to warm before the procedure, the resin needs more prep time. But the gap between "repaired in January" and "not repaired till spring" is the gap between a working windshield and a full-price replacement at a glass service.

How much does a windshield repair cost before the winter season?

Chip up to 1 cm — from 60 ₾, 1–2 cm — from 80 ₾. Crack up to 15 cm — from 95 ₾, 15–30 cm — from 140 ₾. Live pricing for all categories on windshield repair. The final figure on a specific piece of damage is set at the in-person inspection, which takes 5 minutes.

Does a hydrophobic "rain repellent" protect the glass in winter?

A hydrophobic windshield coating helps water, snow and grime slide off — the glass stays cleaner longer, the wipers work less. On healthy glass this is convenient. On chipped glass it does nothing useful: it coats the surface, it does not fill the damage. If a chip is already there, repair first, then a rain repellent can go over the full glass.

Conclusion

Winter windshield care in Tbilisi comes down to three rules: warm the glass gradually (not max-heat straight at the glass), repair every chip before the first freezes, use a plastic scraper instead of metal or a chunk of ice. Plus a proper winter washer fluid, proper wipers and no kettle water on the glass in the morning. Together these cover 90% of the situations where a windshield gets broken over a winter.

The remaining 10% is random — someone else's stone kicked up by the car in front. Against that, it is not winter that helps but early repair: while the chip is still 2 mm, 60 ₾ closes the issue for the rest of the glass's service life.

Key takeaways:

  • Three winter risks: thermal shock, salt-reagents, scraper/ice — all manageable manually.
  • Warm-up: first 10 minutes on low fan away from the glass, then medium fan on the glass.
  • All chips get fixed by mid-November — winter grows damage in a geometric progression.
  • Chip repair up to 1 cm from 60 ₾, replacement at a glass service costs an order of magnitude more.
  • A fresh crack can be "stopped" within 24–48 hours with a drilled trap point.
