After finding a scratch, establish the type of damage before choosing the strongest polishing treatment. Transferred paint, wash swirls and missing paint need different approaches. This guide helps you prepare for inspection; a photograph or a single test cannot guarantee complete removal.
Look at a clean surface in daylight and directional light. Is there one groove, a group of fine marks, a chip or material resting on the surface? Avoid rubbing dirt with a dry cloth, which can add marks. Tell the technician if the damage followed contact with another object.
Lighting, camera magnification and a gentle fingernail check provide clues, not a measurement of depth or a diagnosis of the affected paint layer. A white line does not by itself prove exposed primer. A scratch catching a nail calls for inspection rather than a coarse compound by default.

On glossy paint with a clear coat, correction addresses suitable defects in that layer. 3M notes that damage deeper than clear coat may require a repair involving paint. Removing colour coat to level a scratch is not an appropriate goal.
Minor defects may need less intensive treatment. More pronounced marks can call for a correction stage followed by finishing. Compound, pad and tool are selected for the coating; every car does not need a fixed three-pass routine. See the comparison of light and deeper polishing.
A scratch alone does not reveal a safe clear-coat removal allowance. Inspection must account for the area, repairs and previous polishing. Reducing visibility while preserving the coating can be the appropriate outcome. Agree on any remaining marks before work starts.
Missing coating, corrosion, peeling or damage to underlying layers calls for a body shop's assessment. Paintwork and restoration of the affected area depend on the defect. Do not sand the area just to find out how deep it is.
A local repair does not automatically require polishing the entire car. Any additional correction should address an actual need. Ask the repairer about paintwork costs: BESTAUTO's starting body-polishing price is not a quote for repairing one scratch.
Retail products are not all temporary wax fillers. For example, Meguiar’s ScratchX uses micro-abrasives for light defects on glossy paint. Other products mainly add gloss or protection. Follow the chosen product's directions; one product's capabilities do not apply to every scratch.
