Light polishing usually means less intensive correction; deep polishing means more substantial removal of suitable defects. These are informal labels: ask which areas and stages are included. The right scope depends on paint condition and the result you want.
Both light and intensive correction can use abrasive compounds. The compound, pad and tool combination, treatment of the finish and stages differ. For example, RUPES describes D-A FINE as a micro-abrasive compound for light correction or finishing after a stronger stage. “Light” does not promise zero material removal.
For paint in good condition with fine marks, limited loss of gloss or finishing traces, less intensive work may suffice. It is not solely for new cars: a used car can also have only minor defects.
If inspection finds no significant defects, polishing may be unnecessary. Preparing for protection includes cleaning; the need for correction is a separate decision.
Pronounced swirls, marks from earlier work and several types of defects justify assessing more intensive correction. They do not prove that every defect can be safely removed. Sometimes reducing visibility while retaining more material is the appropriate result.

Photos may not show depth, fine marks or repainting. Inspecting the prepared surface helps define limits; assessing the selected combination on an area helps establish whether it gives sufficient correction. Do not choose purely by the number of passes or a “maximum” label.
Polishing does not fill chips, straighten dents or replace lost clear coat. Removing every mark at any cost is not the aim; agree the result and expected remaining defects before work.
Continued appearance depends on washing; new marks remain possible with any protection. Ceramic coating adds a surface coating for protection and care. PPF wrapping adds a physical film layer to selected areas. Neither replaces missing paint.
Film can be considered for physical protection of selected areas, and ceramic coating for its surface properties and care. Combining products depends on compatibility and the goal. Additional work does not become compulsory simply because the car has been polished.
